DISULFIRAM INDUCED PSYCHOSIS

Abstract
For many yerar, disulfiram(antabuse) has been used as part of a Oavlovian conditioning model to avoid alchol abuse. It produces a very unpleasant and potentially serious reaction when a patient taking it ingests alcohol and is a powerful disincentive in conperative patients.
Adeverse effects from fisulfiram are common. In addition to its effects on aldehyde dehydrogenase, disulfiram inhibits a variety of other exzymes, including dopamine beta-hydroxylase in the brain. It also inhibits hepatic microsomal drug-metabolizing enzymes, such as the mixed function oxidase system. The exacerbation of psychotic symptoms in schizophrenics and occasionally their apperance in nonschizophrenics may be linked to these actions. The purpose of this paper is to report a case of toxic psychosis due to disulfiram and to review the relating literature.
